Roy Howell 2008 CCL Manager Of The Year
SLO Rattlers Manager Roy Howell Named 2008 California Collegiate League (CCL) Manager Of The Year.
Howell received 5 First Place votes and 2 Third Place votes, earning 17 points. Runner-up was Manager Bobby Brown of the Santa Maria Indians, Brown received 1 First Place vote, 2 Second Place Votes, and 5 Third Place votes, garnering 12 points. Manager Bill Pintard, of the 2008 NBC World Series and CCL Champion Santa Barbara Foresters, rounded out the top 3 with 11 points (4 Second Place votes and 3 Third Place votes).
Howell led the Rattlers to a 16-13 (.552) league record in their first season in the CCL. The Rattlers finished in 4th place, 1/2 game behind the Indians and the Conejo Oaks, who tied for 2nd place. The Foresters took the CCL crown with a 19-11 record.
However, the Rattlers were atop the CCL standings for most of the season, after beating the defending CCL champs, the Foresters, in early June.
The Rattlers held 1st Place until key injuries to the pitching staff contributed to a late season slide out of the top slot. Critical losses were closer Kyle Tognazzini, and set-up man Adam Clerici, both All-CCL Relief Pitchers.
Howell led the Rattlers to a 28-21 (.571) overall record for the 2008 Summer, his 2nd leading the Rattlers. He is the only Manager in team history, leading the Rattlers to a 31-15 (.673) record in their Inaugural campaign, making Howell 59-36 (.621) in his 2 seasons guiding the Rattlers.
