Notes- Prospects looked bright for Cuesta when Centerfielder Ryan Smith led off the ballgame with a solo home run, but the Cougars would manage only two more hits over the next eight innings. Palomar took a 2-1 leading thanks to a Cuesta error and a RBI base-hit by DH Anthony Renteria. Cuesta's own DH, Gabe Arcoleo, gave the Cougars back the lead with a two-RBI double in the sixth inning only to have Renteria tie the game back up with a RBI double of his own in the bottom of the frame. The game remained tied for the next three innings as starters Tyler Fick and Bobby Shore gave way to their respective bullpens after a pair of solid outings. In the 10th inning Cuesta finally got to Releiver Shawn Sanford, who had kept the Cougars hitless and scoreless for the previous three innings. Second Baseman Brad Bauer led off with a basehit and was followed by his doubleplay partner Kyle Davis' walk and Smith's hit by pitch. First Baseman Brian McConkey gave the Cougars the lead with a RBI single and left the bases loaded with no outs. The Comets brought back Matt Ferreira for his second appearance of the weekend to try an minimize the damage. Ferreria coaxed Quentin Cate into an infield pop-up and Chad Gross into an RBI fielder's choice. Unfortunately Arcoleo delivered again with a RBI single to score Davis and left runners on the corner. The Cougars attempt at a double steal caught Gross at home and ended the Cougars half of the innings. In the Comets last stand Guy Willeford and Kellen Lee connected off Releiver Richie Mirowski with a pair of one-out singles, but the inning appeared over when Jason Laws grounded a sure double-play ball to Second BAse, only to have the Cougars' Brad Bauer lose the ball and load the bases with one out. Renteria the popped a fly ball into shallow left that nobody could get to for his third RBI of the game, which also left the bases full of Comets. A Sacrifice Fly by Mitch Ferguson closed the gap to one-run (6-5), but Mirowski held on to strikeout Matt Frankfruth to pick up his first winning decision of the year and to advance the Cougars to the next round. The Cougars improved to 32-13-1 on the year, while the Comets fell to 26-21.

Next- Cuesta will host the 2008 Southern California Super Regional next Friday, Saturday and Sunday

Notes- #2 seed Cuesta took advantage of a nine-run second inning to beat #15 Palomar 12-5 in the first game of the best-of-three series. Cuesta Catcher Brian Farris scored the first run of that frame after smashing his first triple of the year. Farris also slugged his first home run of the year and delivered a two-rbi double, but fell a single short of hitting for the cycle. 2008 Western State Conference Player of the Year Quentin Cate was also 4-for-5 with a pair of RBI, while Chad Gross drove in three runs and clouted his 12th home run of the year for the Cuesta cause. Cuesta Starting Pitcher Patrick Haugen had plenty of room to work with and hurled a complete game, while also earning his 8th straight winning decision. The Comets did score a pair of runs off Haugen in the first inning, but by the third inning the game appeared to be out of reach. The Cougars improved to 31-13-1 on the year, while the Comets fell to 26-20.

Notes- Cuesta completed a season sweep over second place Ventura with their fifth win over the Pirates this year.  The Cougars 12-3 win increased their lead in the Western State Conference standing to two games with three games left to play.  Both teams have clinched a playoff berth, but with three games left to play the conference crown and the higher seed is still up for grabs.  Ventura has only lost six WSC games this year and five of those were to the Cougars, while Cuesta must play two of their final three games on the road next week.  Today's game was Cuesta almost from the opening pitch as 2007 All-WSC Hurler Patrick Haugen won his seventh straight decision to improve to 10-3 by scattering five hits and allowing only one earned run over eight innings of work.  Offensively the top of the order feasted on Pirate pitching.  Leadoff hitter Ryan Smith scored the first five times he reached base and was 2-for-3 on the day with a pair of doubles.  Behind him in the line-up First Baseman Brian McConkey was 4-for-6 and drove in five runs, including himself once on a seventh inning two-run home run.  Third baseman Quentin Cate followed McConkey's blast with a solo shot of his own and was also 2-for-3 with a double and three runs driven in.  Overall the Cougars the Cougars slugged 12 hits, including nine for extra bases.  Cuesta is now 27-13-1 overall and 18-4 in the Western State Conference.

Next- Cuesta will begin the final week of the regular season at Oxnard on Tuesday (2:30)

Notes-  The Cuesta Cougars showed no mercy for their local rival with a 26-7 drubbing at Cuesta Field.  The wind was blowing out to right-center all day and while the COugars and Bulldogs both slugged three home runs, it was the Cougars nine doubles that helped make the difference.  Allan Hancock Left-fielder Dane McLaughlin led off the game with the first of his two solo home runs, but the Cougars had gone through three Bulldog pitchers and owned a commanding 16-2 lead by the end of the fourth frame.  Cuesta's Designated Hitter Boomer Donley and Left-fielder Mike Kaminski both drove in five runs for the Cougars.  The Cougars entered today's contest with a two-game lead over Ventura in the Western State Conference standings and they are now 14-3 against the loop.  Overall the Cougars are ranked #7 in the State and have a 23-12-1 record with eight games left in the regular season.

Notes- Ryan Smith led off the game with a solo home run and the Cougars added five more roundtrippers to their total of 22 hits in their 15-8 win over Oxnard. The Cuesta pitching staff overcame a pair of four-run innings by the Condors and Tyler Fick earned the win with a scoreless four-inning relief stint, but the longball was the story of the day. The Cougars second home run of the day was by Mike Kaminski, who gave the Cougars a 5-4 lead with his two-run shot in the third inning. The Cougars eventually fell back behind 8-6, but Chad Gross hit a solo shot in the fifth to pull back within on run. Gross' next home run gave the Cougars back the lead in the seventh inning and the Cougars never looked back. Later in the seventh inning the Condors walked the bases loaded rather than face Cuesta home run leader Quntin Cate, but Designated Hitter Gabe Arcoleo made them pay with a grand slam home run that gave the Cougars an insurmountable 13-8 lead. The Cougars capped off the game with two more runs in the eighth inning, including Gross' third home run of the day. The Cougars are now 2.5 games ahead in the Western State Conference standings with a 12-3 record against the loop. Overall they are 21-12-1.

Notes: Starting Pitchers Mike Alldredge and Jesse Dominguez dominated the first half of the game.  Alldredge held LA Harbor scoreless until a trio of unearned runs ruined his shutout in the seventh inning and Dominguez was working on a no-hitter until Cuesta's Chad Reynolds led off the fifth inning with a home run.  Of course, neither pitcher figured in the decision as the game entered the final frame with both teams tied at three.  Two fielding errors allowed the Seahawks a pair of base runners in the ninth inning and a balk call with two outs sent home the winning run for LA Harbor.  The Seahawks added a pair of insurance runs with back-to-back base hits after the balk and increased their lead to 6-3 before the Cuesta came to the plate in the bottom of the ninth.   All six of LA Harbor's runs were unearned as the Cougars failed to score in their final at bat and lost 6-3.  Cuesta is now 14-11-1.

Cuesta 14, Ventura 4

Winning Pitcher: Matthew Estrada (2-1)
Losing Pitcher: Matt Withem

Notes: First Baseman Quentin Cate hit two more home runs to lead the
Cougars past Ventura College in a 14-4 rout. Cate's first clout was a
solo job in the third inning to give the Cougars a 6-0 lead. He hit a
three-run shot in the sixth inning to give Cuesta an 11-3 lead. Cate
was 4-for-5 on the day and added a double and four RBI to the day. He

State Conference. Leftfielder Mike Kaminski also smashed a two-run
home run in the second inning as part of his 3-for-6 day.
Centerfielder Ryan Smith also enjoyed a three-hit day going 3-for-3
with a a double and three RBI. Winning pitcher Matthew Estrada enjoyed
the longest of his five starts this year. He lasted through the sixth
inning, where an error and a fielders choice without an out ruined his
bid for a shutout. He improved to 2-1 on the year. Cuesta is 9-9-1 on
the year and is 2-1 against the WSC circuit.

Notes: The final game of the Cuesta/Pepsi Baseball Classic began as a pitchers duel and ended up a slugfest. The Cougars welcomed the return of 2006 All-WSC First Team Hurler Tyler Fick, who missed all of last season with Tommy John Surgery. Fick was on a strict pitch count and tossed three scoreless innings, before being relieved by Richie Mirowski. Mirowski and then Keith Powers held Canyons to one run through the first six innings, while the Cuesta offense wore down Canyons Starter China McCarney. McCarney faced 13 batters and did not allow a hit in the first four innings, but after Ryan Smith smacked a base-hit to the rightside the Cougars jumped on a chance to knock him out with three runs. In the sixth inning the Cougars tacked on another four runs highlighted by Brad Bauer's three-run home run to take a 7-1 lead. In the seventh the first three batter Powers faced reach base and the Cougars brought in Todd Simko, who gave up to hard singles before being replaced by Kyle Sousa. Sousa did not fare any better and gave up three more hits, including a three-run home run to Canyons' Rightfielder John Hay. Coach Bob Miller finally brought in Pat Haugen, who started and won Friday's game against Rio Hondo, to try and get the innings first out. Haugen eventually got the COugars out of the inning, but not until Canyons plated nine runners to take a 10-7 lead. That lead was short lived thanks to a three-run double by Ryan Smith to tie the game in the bottom half of the seventh inning. Haugen held Canyons scoreless in the eighth, while his teammates built his lead back to five runs on account of a two-run triple by Mike Kaminski and a two-run home run by Brian McConkey to put the game out of reach. Haugen closed out the game in the ninth to earn his second winning decision in three days and to help the Cougars reach .500 for the first time this year at 4-4-1.

Notes: #2 Cuesta and #15 Rio Hondo are the only two teams in the Cuesta/Pepsi Baseball Classic to earn a preseason ranking by Collegiate Baseball, but today it was all Cuesta.  The Cougars put up eight runs in the second inning, including four runs off Chad Gross grand slam, to settle the game before it even really began.  First Baseman Brian McConkey drove in two more runs in the Cougars four-run third and with a dozen runs in his pocket 2007 All-WSC First Team Pitcher Pat Haugen had all the support he needed.  Haugen tossed five scoreless innings before handing the game over the bullpen for the final four frames.  The Cougars four relievers allowed five runs, but the Cougars plated three more runs in the eighth on a Roadrunner error to maintain a safe lead.  The Cougars are now 3-4-1 on the year.

Next: The Pepsi Classic will continue tomorrow with two games at Sinsheimer Park (10 and 2) and a 2 PM game at both Allan Hancock and Cuesta.  The Cougars will not play again until Sunday when the face Canyons at 11 AM.

Cuesta Stat of the Day: C Quentin Cate: 3-4, one run scored

Notes: Cuesta made it easy for defending State Champion Riverside by giving up four earned runs to get the Tigers started. The COugars scored one run to take the lead in the second, but left the bases loaded. In the top of the third the Tigers scored three unearned runs to take the lead and added another run off an error in the fourth inning and that was all they needed. The Cougars pulled within a run, 4-3, in the fourth inning, but again they left the bases loaded and let the Tigers off the hook. In all the Cougars stranded 11 basemen and the Tigers only left five. Riverside scored twice in the fifth inning on sacrifice flies and made a living off the COugars mistakes. Cuesta hurlers walked the Tigers six times and five of those runners came around to score. Cuesta is now 1-3-1 overall.

Notes: Cuesta turned the tables on defending State Champion Riverside with a 12-4 win over the Tigers one day after losing to them 13-4. The win was powered by a pair of solid pitching performances. Freshman Lefty Matthew Estrada cruised through the first five innings by striking out four and allowing only one run. In the sixth a leadoff error landed Riverside's Michael Hur on first base and the Tigers' clean-up hitter Jeremiah Mejia followed up with a two-run home run to close the gap to 8-3. The Cougars brought in 2007 All-WSC First Teamer Pat Haugen after Mejia's blast and he set down the rest of the side. Haugen went on to complete the game to pick up the save. The Cougars improved to 2-3-1 on the year.

Next: The Cougars will travel to Cypress for a game on Tuesday (2 PM) and will host the Pepsi Classic next Friday through Saturday. The Cougars will play Rio Hondo on Friday (2 PM) and Canyons on Sunday (11 AM)
