2009 NBC World Series Wrap Up

The 2009 National Baseball Congress (NBC) World Series concluded Saturday Night, August 15th, 2009.  It was the 75th installment of the end of summer Tournament played in Wichita. Kansas.

The El Dorado Broncos (Kansas) defeated the Anchorage Glacier Pilots (Alaska) 2-1, in 11 innings, to claim their 5th NBC World Championship.  The Broncos had previously claimed the Title in 1996 and 1998, and in 1989 and 1990 as the Wichita Broncos.  Broncos Pitcher Jake Sabol was named Tournament MVP.  The Glacier Pilots had to defeat the Broncos twice in order to claim the title.

The Glacier Pilots were seeking a record tying 6th NBC Championship, a mark held by the Fairbanks Goldpanners (Alaska).  The Glacier Pilots were in their 11th Finals, tying them for second All-Time with the Liberal BeeJays (Kansas).  The Goldpanners have 12 Finals Appearances.  The Glacier Pilots last won the title in 2001.

Notable contributors for the Glacier Pilots were 2009 SLO Rattlers players First Baseman Joe Weik (Weatherford/TCU) and Shortstop Mike Miller (Cuesta/Cal Poly), as well as 2007-08 Rattlers Relief Pitcher Kyle Tognazzini (Cuesta/Lipscomb University).  Miller was named to the 2009 NBC World Series All-American Team (Got information off of Glacier Pilots website, 2009 NBC World Series All-American Team not posted on NBC website yet).

The California Collegiate League (CCL) was well-represented in Wichita as well.  Defending NBC Champions, and 2009 CCL Champion Santa Barbara Forester finished tied for 4th along with CCL 2nd place finisher, the Conejo Oaks.

The Foresters were seeking their 2nd consecutive, and 3rd NBC Title overall.  The Foresters were eliminated 3-2 in 14 innings by 3rd Place Finisher the Liberal BeeJays.  The Foresters have finished no worse than 4th over the last 5 years, an achievement that should be noted.  The Foresters finished in 4th in 2005, 1st in 2006, 2nd in 2007, 1st in 2008, and 4th this summer.  Bill Pintard and Pat Burns of the Foresters are to be commended for the program they have built in Santa Barbara.

The Oaks finished tied for 4th Overall in only their 4th Summer of play.  They were eliminated by Glacier Pilots 7-3.

The Rattlers would like to congratulate all of the 2009 CCL members of their achievements in Wichita, their performances represented the CCL well on a National level, and they should ALL be proud of their efforts.
